When I rebranded earlier this month, I finally made the big switch: I migrated from Blogger to WordPress.
It was a big decision and I was honestly a little scared! So many people talk about the huge learning curve that comes with WordPress or how difficult it is to migrate your posts, comments, and images. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how user-friendly WordPress is! Not only are there TONS of tutorials out there for any questions I have, but the interface itself is just extremely easy to navigate.
I’m definitely never looking back – the switch was totally worth it and here’s why:
1 – Ownership
On Blogger, Google owns all of your content.
Let that sink in.
I’m not going to lie – this terrifies me. With all of the time and effort I spend writing blog posts and working on my website, I want to own it completely! Your blog can be removed at any time. While this doesn’t seem to happen often, I’ve heard horror stories of years of content being deleted forever. Um, no thanks! On self-hosted WordPress, you own complete rights to all of your content and images.
2 – Customization options
Over the year that I blogged regularly on Blogger, I found myself increasingly frustrated by its limitations. At first, I learned to code simply so that I could work around those limitations. But with WordPress, there are so many tutorials for customizing your blog if you’re DIY-ing it, and there are tons of available themes for bloggers in any niche. If you’re looking to purchase a theme, I HIGHLY recommend Station Seven and Bluchic. There are so many amazingoptions on WordPress as far as design goes!
After moving from Blogger to WordPress, I’m loving the sophistication and different options that a WordPress site has.
3 – Professionalism
While Blogger is often a great option for a new blogger who’s not sure if they’ll stick with blogging long enough to invest in it, WordPress is perfect for those who aim to take blogging more seriously – maybe even as a career! Of course, being on Blogger doesn’t make your blog automatically unprofessional, but WordPress does add a certain level of credibility. Almost 75 million websites use WordPress – they must be doing something right!
4 – Better SEO
It’s actually ironic that WordPress has better SEO than Blogger, which is owned by Google. SEO is extremely intimidating – and just another thing that you have to worry about – but WordPress in general just has much better SEO than other content management systems. But if you want to make it even better, you can just install Yoast SEO, a plugin that allows you to control the SEO settings for each blog post, thereby making your post more SEO-friendly. I highly recommend it – it has made my life so much easier!
5 – Plugins
Speaking of plugins, they’re pretty much the best thing ever! Ever since switching to WordPress, I’ve been obsessed with finding the best plugins for my site. Anything you could ever want to add to your website, either design-wise or to use on the dashboard – portfolios, sliders, Google Analytics, Instagram – there’s a plugin for it! Plugins are just a lifesaver.
There you have it: the top 5 reasons why I moved from Blogger to WordPress!
Are you on Blogger or WordPress? If you have or haven’t switched – I would love to know your reasons!
